Towards an evidence-based clinical management of visual hallucinations: prevalence, prognosis, impact and pathophysiology
This 6-year NIHR funded study aimed to inform NHS practice and policy regarding visual hallucinations in older people with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or eye disease.
Qualitative methods were used in multiple workstreams to collect evidence upon which to ground guidelines for NHS professionals and people with visual hallucinations. Interviews with NHS professionals were conducted to gain in-depth understanding of current practice for visual hallucinations. Qualitative interviews were also conducted with people who experience visual hallucinations who have either dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or eye disease, and their carers, to understand their experiences of these and needs regarding treatment and support.
