QUAHRC Seminar: Health Research Under Siege
Since October 7 2023, hundreds of Palestinian medics and healthcare workers have been killed or detained, all 12 universities in Gaza have been destroyed, and healthcare facilities have been decimated including 20 out of 22 hospitals in Northern Gaza. Amidst this devastation, conducting qualitative and participatory health research presents profound challenges and moral dilemmas. This seminar explores the how Palestinian researchers have reacted and adapted. Featuring insights from Dr Weeam Hammoudeh, Dr Layth Hanbali, and Dr Zeina Amro, we will discuss if and how health research should take place during an ongoing genocide, to what extent qualitative and participatory research can be useful in these conditions, and the critical importance of capturing lived experiences and local realities of the research process itself. The session will end by examining the practical steps international researchers can take to support Palestinian health researchers and what makes for an ethical international partnerships.
Imperial College London Friends of Palestine will facilitate an activity at the end of this seminar to foster critical reflection and get the audience thinking about practical actions of solidarity.
