Qualitative Open Mic: Ethics in Qualitative Research - Episode 2 - Latefa Guemar on the skills and values of an ethical researcher
In this series, we'll be highlighting positive ethical practices in qualitative research with marginalised groups, and discussing ways in which we can make qualitative research inherently more ethical.
In this episode:
Dr Latefa Guemar explores the values and skills needed by ethical researchers across diverse settings and research approaches. Latefa is an activist and researcher specialising in examining gender issues within forced migration, diaspora and individual identities, and inventive methodologies for exploring migration. Her PhD studied the experiences of skilled Algerian women who sought refuge. Latefa has also worked with numerous non-profit organisations dedicated to facilitating the integration of refugees in London.
In this episode, Latefa begins by introducing her stance on ethics and what are the most important ethical values. She then shares her first-hand experiences in overcoming challenges in research that traditional ethics cannot resolve. The discussion then moves to Latefa sharing the innovative ways she melds quantitative and qualitative methods to build connections with participants sharing personal traumatic experiences. The conversation ends by reflecting on the ethical takeaways Latefa has learnt from her involvement with charities.
