Accessing healthcare settings for observational research is difficult at the best of times, and became impossible during Covid. Yet, a seemingly inexhaustible stream of reality shows and documentaries set in NHS hospitals can be a source of high-quality footage of clinical interactions. Drawing on her experience of using the BBC documentary series Hospital to research how gratitude is accomplished, Giskin Day will consider the ethical and analytical implications of using broadcast footage as data for qualitative research.
